Hamedan-2018
A few notes on the design of the "Hamadan 2018" poster
2018 June 10

Obviously, the concept of any artwork is latent in itself. Although visual arts override words, the following explanations shed light on different aspects of this poster. The initial concept of this work emerged from exhaustive studies on the history of miniature, aesthetics, archeology, and anthropology.

Composition
In addition to observance of design principles such as golden proportion, optical flow, elements balance and alignment, I attempted to employ an adaptation of the Persian miniature, which is the most striking visual art in the Persian-Islamic culture. Miniature painting became a significant genre in Persian art in the 13th century, and the highest point in the tradition was reached in the 15th and 16th centuries in different cities including Hamedan. In this regard, I employed the golden ratio with pure Iranian authenticity in the picture.

Color principles
Throughout all colors, the world knows only one color as the original Iranian-Islamic color: Persian green, the color that is used in all the Iranian minerals and aesthetic symbols of Islamic Iran. Due to the long history of Ekbatana in Iranian-Islamic culture, I used Persian green as the dominant color in this work and included a selection of the city’s historical places and buildings. I also chose a variety of colors with regard to the color psychology and the aesthetic of the original Islamic-Iranian colors. Also, considering the acceptance of all cultures, ethnics and ages, I used a variety of colors that are cheerful and promising.

Signs and Symbols
Among all the sign and symbols of the city, I tried to select those elements that illustrates the identity of the city in a modern way. For example, the great bustard that I put at the bottom of the page is a noble threatened species which only a few of them are inhabited in Hamadan. It is notable that the Hamedan Badminton Federation has used this bird in their logo as a gesture for supporting it. I used different elements ranging from Avicenna and Baba Tahir tombs, and Ganjnameh ancient inscriptions to golden eagle, which is also an endangered species and only a few of them have remained in Alvand mountains and are important in the context of environmental biology.

Another symbol that I used in this poster is Armenian mouflon, which is carved on top of the Ganjnameh scripts and reminds us of the ancient civilization of Medes in this land. Last but not least, I used a design element related to Lalejin city, as it is recognized by UNESCO for its pottery and ceramic products.

Typography and layout
Referring to the Iranian and Islamic classics texts, which usually design pages with a brownish-golden border to express their respect for the letters, I used a similar approach to show the significance of this important historical event.
