Hamedan-2018

Memorial of Abu-Ala

In each corner of the city of Hamedan, a memorial is remained from the deepest layers of Iran's history. The tower of Qurban is one of the historical monuments of the 7th or 8th century AH which is located between “Madani Chahar Bagh” and “Taleghani” Street in Hamedan; not far from “Andisheh High School”. The tower is the burial place of “Sheikh al-Islam Hasan Bin Atar Hafiz Abu al-'Ala Hamedani” and a group of Seljuks' emirs and was built in a simple, not scintillation way.

But why the name of the “Qurban” for the tower?
Archeologists have come to the conclusion that during the Afghan revolt in the late Safavid period, a person called "Qurban" placed this place as his fortress and defended the locals while fighting the insurgents and hence the mosque and tomb are in his name. This is a dodecagon brick tower with a pyramid dome. The length of the 12 sides of the tower is more than 2 meters from the outside and a bit more than one meter on the inside. The outer front of the building consists of arches with 15 cm depth and 123 centimeters width on each side, adjoining with side-laterals on each corner. In the middle of the tower on the arched vault is a simple and ordinary gravestone. This text is carved in 6 rows on it:
“O Ghafar-al-zonub, this is the tomb of the late Al Wasl (may Allaah have mercy on him) Muhammad, deceased in the month of Dhajjah al-Haram 1090»
This stone was built in the Safavid period. The great grandfather of Abu'l'a'a Hamedani is considered to be an Arab, but Abu-Ala himself and his father were Hamedani. The date of his death is considered to be in the month of Dhajjah al-Haram in 488.
